El Lodge Taos
Used to say "Elk" on the gate till the "K" fell off.
Built in the late 1940s as a three-season hunting and fishing lodge Elk Lodge hosted many family vacations on its 20 acres of high pasture plateau up at 9,200 feet within the Carson National Forest. The plateau and surrounding hillsides are populated by Elk, deer, bears, mountain lions, coyotes, and bobcats and the Rio Pueblo headwaters flow through the property chockfull of brown and rainbow trout. There also is a horse coral, stables, and tack room on the lower/back level of the property by the stream. Over the course of the next 60 years, the property has transferred time three times and has also been known as "Walton's Mountain" and "Tejas Mountain Lodge." Now owned by former property manager Stephen G. Barr , retired real estate broker, appraiser & developer, and social media publisher with plans for complete renovation and expansion to include nightly vacation rentals, glamping sites reactivation of the stables, EV charging station, and a yet-to-be determined type food service, sledding hill, fishing pond, shuttle service and tours, bespoke adventures.
Note: Due to this summer's wildfires and our evacuation from the property for a month we were not able to complete most of the work we had scheduled so we have decided to suspend our ongoing construction now until spring. The Lodge will not be rented out this ski season on a nightly rental basis as we had hoped which has been an unforeseeable setback then further exasperated by FEMA's rejection of our claim of economic hardship. We have retained legal counsel to aggressively pursue all available means to dispute their decision. Joseph, Harmon, and Steve will remain on the property through the Winter and complete some interior repairs and upgrades while we attempt to secure tenancies in the lodge and cabin four to help offset overhead and existing debt service.
We will get back to you as soon as we can!
